Miscellaneous Monday

Well I conquered a major feat this weekend.  A five mile hike on Mt. Rainier?  No problem.  My foray into Forever 21.  Scary.  At least in the past.

This time I enlisted the help of my awesome friend Erin to help me literally WADE through the massive amount of clothing.  I swear this store is the size of a small country.  But somehow with a good friend it was WAY less intimidating than the last time I tried to shop there.  That time I left feeling like a granny.  The music was too loud.  The clothes were too tight.  I got lost about 8 times.

This is my FAVorite thing I came home with.  Plus I found a chambray shirt.  I've only been looking for one since about March.

I try to be good about not posting pictures that might embarrass my children one day.  But that all goes out the window when they decide to empty an entire canister of oats and then play in them.  Apparently eating oats by the fistful is delicious.

We had a garage sale in may of this year and I purged a LOT.  I got rid of toys, clothes, shoes, random kitchen items.

Yet I STILL feel like we have too much stuff!  I can't figure out the balance between being prepared and having a house that is stuffed to the gills.
I've decided to take a break from "dieting".  I've concentrated so hard this past year on eating the "right" things that I don't even enjoy eating or cooking anymore.  I miss cooking like I miss a good friend.  So I'm cooking again.  Healthy stuff.  But whatever I want.  Even if it has dairy or grains.

We did a crazy hike at Mt. Rainier this weekend.  We didn't realize how crazy it would be but here are a couple of pictures.  I'll be posting many more because it was gorgeous.  I was exhausted after toting Reed for over 4 hours and 5 miles.  This wasn't your ordinary hike!

All the trail looks clear here!

Beautiful meadows of wildflowers through most of the first couple of miles.

Gorgeous view!

At the top of the hike.  Panorama Point.

You probably can't read this sign but it says "Steep and Icy Trail"  It was a little crazy!

Well it is practically Tuesday by the time I'm finishing this.  Busy and fun day with my little ones.

Hope your Monday was fabulous!!

My Boys Lately

The Little Guy is into being a good helper.  He asks often "Mama am I a good helper?"  Then he tells me that I am a good helper and Daddy is a good helper.

Reading Bible stories

This kid.  I find him on this table about 70 times a day.  He is obsessed.

A few weeks ago we went to member only night at the zoo.  The carousel ride was free so of course we had to ride!!  Not sure the Reedster was too excited!!

This guy loved it though!!

We also got to feed the budgie birds.  Definitely the highlight of the night.

This is about as good as it comes when we're doing self portraits these days.

And this might be my favorite picture of this kid ever.  Watermelon....dirt...little belly....perfection!

Please Wait....Part II

God has definitely told me "Please wait" before.  In fact when I was working at the College of Charleston I had a sign printed out that I hung on my refrigerator with those words on it.  It's one of the only times in my life I felt the Lord almost audibly speak to me.  I felt like I needed to see them often to remind myself.  In some ways they were a command and yet I felt they were a promise.

Please wait.

This time though I just felt confused.  The earthly part of me wanted God to have some kind of master plan where I saved the world.  All of the sudden I'd write a bestseller that changed people's lives.  Or maybe we'd open an orphanage.  Sometimes I think we sit down and think of who people will remember us as and we forget to be who we are.  Who we're meant to be.

So instead I just sat back.  Somedays I was kind of angry.  I was ready to start doing something.  And yet God was eerily silent.

Or so I thought.

Back in January a friend of mine approached me about a business opportunity and like the mature person I was I looked at it, thought it was NOT something I was interested in and then never got back in touch with her.

We finally touched base in March and although what she presented to me was intriguing I still wasn't ready to jump on.  Plus God wasn't interested in me selling skincare.  He wanted me to change the world.

About the same time Peter and I started discussing expanding our family.  Timeline...etc.  We knew we wanted more children and I had been discussing adoption as an option someday.  I started thinking that this was our time.  Friends were adopting.  I was reading all of these blogs about adoptive Mamas.  I began to think this was the Lord's answer to my prayers.

Except it takes two people to be on board.  And one of us wasn't.

And I was kind of mad.

I didn't understand why Peter couldn't see why we should adopt NOW!  It was a great way to show God's love to a child that otherwise might not have a family.  Clearly we should be doing this.

Please wait said my husband.

And if I've learned one thing from my marriage I've learned to follow the lead of the Godly man that I married.  It's hard to follow when you like to be in front.  But I feel SO strongly that this is my role as a wife.  Plus it's easy to follow someone who is consistently seeking the Lord and clearly values my thoughts and opinions so much when making decisions.

Those two words again.

Please wait.

Clearly this is taking longer than I thought to process and write!  Hope you'll come back for the end....whenever I get there!!

Please Wait

I've referenced feeling a little "off" or having a sort of bloggers "writers block" over the past few months.  Instead of writing we've been doing a lot of family stuff and I've been watching a lot of reruns of The Office.  True story.  I wasn't comfortable sharing where I was and I couldn't seem to find my way out of this funk I was in.

In January I started to feel like God was calling me to do something.  It was a very general and frankly frustrating feeling.  I had no idea what that meant.  I talked it through with a couple of friends and came up with some ideas of my own.  But they were my ideas.  None of these seemed to satisfy this feeling in my heart that the Lord had sometime in specific he wanted me to do.

I kept waiting for someone to call me and ask me to do a task.  Or email me.  Something.  Anything!  I threw around the idea of starting an etsy shop, making prints, painting again, adopting a baby (something that's been on my heart anyway for a long time).  The Lord was silent.

I started getting depressed.  Even though I shouldn't have I was looking at those around me and measuring myself against them.  There were people adopting, writing life-changing books, going on missions trips, writing successful blogs that gave glory to Jesus.  There were people my age out there changing the world and I was at home changing diapers.

I've found that most times in my life when I felt like the Lord was silent that really he was speaking two words to me.

Please wait.

I'll be sharing more of my story in the days to come!

Ruston Way

When we first arrived in Tacoma I was a little awestruck by the amazing scenery.  I'm not sure what I thought Washington would look like but it certainly wasn't this.  We have a peek-a-boo view of both the sound and the mountain from our bedroom and we try to walk by the waterfront often, especially during the summer.

Here are a few of my favorite pictures from one of our walks this July.

These boys love each other. Look at those cute crossed legs.

My two big boys running towards the playground.

Enjoying the new playground.  The views from this little playground can't be beat!

Love my boys!!

This ship is actually the office where you can go buy property in a new development.  The other day we walked by and it was gone.  We thought that was funny.

View looking East on the playground.

This guy.  He wants to help all the time now.  He'll ask me "Mama am I such a good helper?"  I can't help but tell him yes.

Just another view of "the mountain"

And another

Loved this guy out paddleboarding with his dog.

Beautiful end to a beautiful evening!

Mini Fruit PIzza

Loving your country is in style all year round so it's ok that I'm 3 weeks late with these cookies right?  Being in the military has definitely taken my patriotism to a new level--yes I cry every time I hear cheesy I love America songs and I'm not afraid to admit it.

These cookies are actually a mini version of a favorite dessert I had growing up.  My Mom would make fruit pizza and I used to request it as my birthday cake because I loved it so much.

Like all of my recipes it looks beautiful but is ridiculously easy.

1 roll of sugar cookie dough
1 package of cream cheese
2/3 cup sugar
various fruits

I took the really easy way out with these and got the cookies that are preformed in the flat package.  You know the kind I'm talking about.  The ones that no one wants to admit they use but taste so good and are so easy!  I am not a baker so any short cut I can get I will take.

Bake your cookies.
Cream the sugar and cream cheese together in a bowl.
Spread the mixture on cooled cookies.
Decorate as you please.

Yep!  That's it.  I used red white and blue to stick with the I love America theme but you can really use any fruit you want.  They are yummy regardless!!

This is a great dessert that you can make without having to remember tons of ingredients to pick up at the store.  I like to keep cookie dough in the freezer in case of an emergency and then the only thing you need is the cream cheese and fruit!

Hope you enjoy these as much as we do!

WIFWW--What I am FINALLY Wearing Wednesday

Well I'm back after almost a month or maybe two away from this fun post!  I swear I've gotten dressed more than 3 times since then.  Although it has been unseasonably hot here and we have been doing some hiking so I can't say what I have worn has been too inspiring!

I also have realized when I go back and look at what I have worn that my style is too predictable.  I like it, don't get me wrong.  But I feel like a better person could guess what I would have on most days.  I tend to go with a solid top, solid bottom and fun jewelry.  And while I'm fine with that most of the time I feel like I need to mix it up a bit.

What should I add to my wardrobe that is Mommy friendly but fun??

So this fun dress!  Recently I went through my closet and got rid of a ridiculous number of dresses.  Most were just ill fitting and not flattering.  I found this cute blue dress on a fun girls shopping trip and just couldn't say no.  It's my absolute favorite color.  It's LOFT of course and I've paired it with a small white bubble necklace from Zulily and my awesome sparkly flats from Nine West.  I wore this for my business debut!

I found these jeans on the same shopping trip.  I love the washed out color and the fact that they have lycra in them.  I used to avoid those types of pants but I gravitate towards them now.  If you saw a WIWW post featuring my rear you would see that I don't have much of one.  Jeans that fit my in the waist are HUGE in the rear and end up falling down and sagging.  These don't do that. Shoes are from TJ Maxx and shirt is vintage's at least 5 years old.

I love that occasionally it is cool enough to wear a summery looking long sleeved outfit here.  Peasant top is Loft and pants are TJ Maxx.  My shoes are flip flops from Target.  Every year they come out with a silver, black and gold pair.  I get the silver each year and they are my go-to pair of shoes until my feet can't stand the cold.

Last but not least.  See these shorts? Or crops?  Or whatever you call them?  They haven't fit in at LEAST 3 years but I think actually 4.  Do you know how EXCITING that is to me??  They are still a tad tight but not too tight to wear out!  They are GAP and my shirt is Loft.  Shoes again from TJ Maxx....another go-to summer pair.  I love grey/silver so much.  I used to pair everything with black but I find it so harsh now.  Pewter is by far my favorite shoe color.

So there you have it.  Hopefully fitting in these pants will keep motivating me to get off these last 15 pounds.  I've been stuck for at least 6 months and it is time to just do it!!

Miscellany Monday

Somehow I've managed to take a 3 week blogging break without intending to!  We've been busy around here and I'm learning to just enjoy life as it comes.  That means iphone pictures instead of perfect DSLR prints but let's be honest.  Life through the lens of my phone is probably a little more accurate.  A little blurry...a lot of real.

Little Guy as a paci man until just recently.  As an early birthday/give up your paci present we got him a balance bike.  At first he hated it but now he wants to ride it all the time.  He carries it up and down the stairs of our house so he can ride it all day long.  It's adorable!

I grew up attending the Christian and Missionary Alliance Church.  To my delight the church we've found ourselves attending here in Tacoma is also a CMA church.  This hymnal was our church hymnal growing up.  A buddy of mine instagrammed this a couple of weeks ago when he was leading worship at his home church.  Immediately I checked the internet to see if I could find a used copy and it finally arrived last week!  I can't wait to delve into it and use it during my quiet time!

This!  This little venture is a little crazy and a lot of fun.  If you would have asked me 3 months ago if I was interested in starting my own business the answer would have been a definite no.  But the Lord clearly had his hand on this!  Stay tuned for a little more of my story this week.  I'm SO excited about what God is going to do!!

Does your entry way look like this?  Geez!!  I feel like I clean up this area 9 times a day and it is stil full of stuff!!  This is real life.  Also why are we wearing pants in JULY!!!

This was yummy!!  Recipe stolen from my dear friend Mica coming this week!!

I might have gone the long way home the other day.  And by the long way I mean driving around no the west end until I found the perfect spot to capture the sunset.  It was glorious!

I took the plunge and went blonde again.  My sister says you should spend money on your hair and your skin....those are the things that you have every day.  So I did.  And I love it!

This kid.  He came downstairs the other night and told me he couldn't sleep.  When I asked him what he was up to he said, "Reading ham and bible stories."  What?  It took me a while to realize he was talking about the Green Eggs and Ham variety!!

If you are a new follower welcome!!  I'm so glad to have you!!  This is going to be a busy blogging week...lots of fun stuff going on!  (I use a LOT of exclamation points.)

Happy Monday!!

Olympic National Park--Park Two

Our second day of our mini-vacation in the Olympic Peninsula started with a visit to the Olympic Game Farm.  The Olympic Game Farm was the host of many Disney movies that centered on wildlife.  They have lions, tigers, bears....pretty much anything you can think of!!

The boys were excited to feed the deer.

The deer were a little less excited with all of the squealing!

Petting the llamas.  Way too many llamas stuck their head in my car.

Feeding a bison.  Or maybe a yak?  This place had them all!

Crescent Lake

Marymare Falls

This guy decided he was going to be a climber.  He has been tentative about climbing in the past so I was proud of his adventurous spirit!

Helping brother Reed during our hike in the rainforest.  Impossible to get a picture of them without blurry feet!

Playing peek-a-boo int he trees.

The Hoh River

He spent some of the hike here but was anxious to get down and run.

Another view of the Hoh.

More blurry feet and hand holding.

We decided to press on to the Pacific!

It's amazing how different the beachscape is from Charleston.

The Olympic Peninsula is full of awesome things to do!!  We were only there for about 36 hours and we packed in a week's worth of fun.  We can't wait to go back!!
